How to choose the right glasses?
When deciding on the choice of sunglasses, it is important to consider the conditions in which we will use the glasses. In different conditions, we can encounter different intensities of solar radiation. Therefore, there are different types of lenses with a certain light transmission. This light transmission is stated as the amount of light expressed in percentages that is able to penetrate the pupil. The higher the percentage, the more light the lens lets through. A visor with transmittance above 90% is therefore suitable for worse lighting conditions, e.g. cloudy, overcast or snowy. Conversely, lenses with a lower percentage of transmittance are suitable for situations where it is necessary to better protect the eyes from strong sunlight.
Sun filter category
Category | Light transmission | Properties | Use | Symbol |
CAT 0 | 80 - 100 % | Transparent glasses, suitable for protective sports glasses, thanks for the sporty halo. | cloudy, dusk
CAT 1 | 43 - 80 % | Glasses with slightly colored lenses, often yellow or orange. Their most important function is to brighten the surroundings. They are suitable for poor lighting conditions in autumn or winter or in the dark. | fog, cloudy
CAT 2 | 18 - 43 % | Classic universal permeability, most common in urban fashion glasses. It also fits in the car due to its balance when moving from sun to shade. It appears less often with sports glasses. | partly cloudy
CAT 3 | 8 - 18 % | This category of solar transmission is most typical for sports glasses. Due to their relatively high blackout, they are suitable for summer days, for sports that require good visibility. It is not suitable for darkness or poor lighting conditions. | clear, sunny
CAT 4 | 3 - 8 % | Special very dark glasses for more extreme conditions. For deserts or glaciers, this surface has a large number of reflective surfaces. These glasses must not be used when driving a car! | extremely sunny |
